A mechanism.
A flip-up helmet has a chin bar that lifts. An adventure helmet has a peak and usually a visor and a drop-down sun shield. Both are more useful than a plain shell and both have more that can go wrong.
What the helmet is approved as.
A flip-up is approved either as a full-face, or as both a full-face and an open-face — which is to say, whether it is homologated to be ridden with the chin bar raised. The two are different approvals and a rider who lifts the bar at traffic lights should know which one they have.
That is printed on the label sewn to the retention strap, with the standard, the approval number and the country.
Noise. A chin bar that lifts needs a seal that is a compromise, and adventure peaks catch wind at speed. Neither is a fault; both are the cost of the mechanism.
Weight. Hinges, latches and shields all add mass, at the top of your neck, for every hour of every ride.
