A volume in litres, and a plate that is sold separately
The best motorcycle top boxes for 2026
A top box is bought on a number of litres and lives or dies on what holds it to the machine. That is the first thing to settle: a mounting plate is almost always a separate purchase, it is specific to the box maker, and the plate then needs a rack or a fitting kit specific to the machine. Three parts, three references, and a listing that quotes only the box has quoted about half the price. Two systems dominate and are not interchangeable, so the plate decides which boxes can ever be fitted afterwards. Then the published figures, which are unusually honest in this family because they are structural. Capacity in litres, which is measured differently enough between makers that the useful test is the one people actually apply: whether a full-face helmet fits, and which one, since a large adventure helmet is a very different object from a compact jet. Maximum load is genuinely limiting — a top box sits at the end of a lever behind the rear axle — and it is the figure this family withholds: every box on this page leaves its load limit blank, and every one leaves its own weight blank too. The opening direction, top-hinged or side-hinged, which decides whether the box can be opened with a pillion in place. Locking, and whether the box lock can be keyed to the ignition, which most makers offer and few listings mention. And the backrest, a common accessory that changes how a pillion sits. We compare capacity, mounting system and plate, helmet fit, opening direction, locking and keying, and backrest availability.
