Magnets, straps or a ring — and what your tank is made of
A tank bag is the only luggage that stays within reach while riding, which is why it carries the documents, the phone and the things needed at a border. How it attaches is the whole decision, and there are three answers with different consequences. Magnetic bags are the fastest to fit and to remove, and they need a steel tank — a great many modern machines have plastic or aluminium tanks, and on those a magnetic bag simply does not work. Strap bags fit anything, take longer to fit, and put webbing across paint. Ring systems replace the fuel cap ring with one that the bag clips onto: they are the most secure and the quickest to release, and the ring is specific to the machine, which makes the bag a two-part purchase like a top box. Once attachment is settled, the figures are straightforward. Capacity, often published as a range because many bags expand with a zip — and an expanded bag sits higher, which matters for a rider who leans forward. Tank compatibility, published by makers who list machines, which is worth more than a photograph of a tank that is not yours. A waterproof cover, almost always supplied, almost never as good as a sealed bag. A map or phone pocket on the top face, and whether it can be used with gloves. And a carry strap, because the bag comes off at every stop and has to go somewhere.
