Textile or leather: which jacket should I buy?

Textile if you ride in varied weather and want one jacket: layers, venting, pockets, a membrane. Leather if you ride mostly in dry warmth and want a garment that lasts a decade. The question is not which protects; it is which one you will actually put on.

What textile gives you

Adaptability. A shell, a membrane and a thermal liner sold as one garment, vents that open at a light, pockets in useful places and adjustment at the waist and forearms. It is the jacket for a rider who leaves in the cold and arrives in the warm, or who does not get to choose the weather.

What leather gives you

Longevity and figures you can compare. Hide thickness is published in millimetres, seam construction is described, and a well-made leather jacket outlives several textile ones. It is heavier, it is poor in sustained rain, and perforated panels are what make it wearable in summer.

The line that decides it for most people

Where the membrane sits, on the textile side. A membrane laminated to the shell keeps the outer fabric from soaking, so the jacket stays light in rain and dries fast. A membrane on a removable inner liner is cheaper and means stopping to fit a layer that is inside the jacket — which in practice means being wet first. Both are published.

What is the same in both

Armour. What the jacket arrives with, to which level, and whether the pockets hold it over the joint when the arm is bent — those questions are identical in either material, and the answer is frequently that the back protector is a foam placeholder rather than certified armour.

The honest tiebreaker

Count the days. A jacket that is right for the riding you do six days out of ten beats one that is ideal for the other four. Riders who keep both generally bought the textile one first.
