A cover is judged on one property above all the others, and it is the one that separates a cover from a bag: whether it is breathable. A machine put away warm, or simply cooling overnight, releases moisture. A waterproof, non-breathable cover traps it, and the result is condensation on every surface under the cover, which is worse for a machine than leaving it uncovered. Makers who have solved this publish a breathable membrane or vent panels, and the ones who have not publish neither. The second property is specific to motorcycles and does not exist on car covers: a heat-resistant panel over the exhaust. A cover put on a hot machine melts where it touches the silencer, and a lined panel in that area is published where it exists. After those two, the practical figures. Dimensions, published in centimetres and compared against the machine with its luggage and screen fitted, since a cover cut for a naked machine will not close over a top box. Wind straps or an elasticated hem, because a cover that leaves in the night is not a cover — and the straps under the belly are what actually hold it. Lock eyelets, which let a cover be secured with the same chain that secures the machine and prevent it being lifted. Vents at the top, which reduce ballooning as well as helping moisture out. And packed size, which decides whether it can be carried on a trip or only used at home.
