A paddock stand lifts a wheel off the ground so a chain can be turned, a tyre changed or a machine stored, and the first decision is where it lifts from — because that is not a preference but a property of the motorcycle. A swingarm stand takes the machine under the swingarm on rubber or nylon cups, and works on most machines with a conventional swingarm. A spool stand engages bobbins screwed into threaded holes in the swingarm, which many sports machines have and many others do not; the bobbins are a separate purchase with a thread size the machine publishes. A front stand lifts under the headstock or under the fork bottoms, and needs the rear supported first. Choosing one that a given machine cannot accept is the most common error here, and the machine's own manual is where the lifting points are published. After the lifting point, the figures are structural and comparable. The load rating, published in kilograms, read against the weight of the machine — with a margin, because a stand is loaded dynamically while the machine is pushed onto it. The adapters supplied, since a stand sold with two cups and no bobbins is half a purchase. The wheels, which have to roll on a garage floor under load and which are where cheap stands flex. And the width adjustment, because swingarms differ and a stand that only fits at one width fits one machine.
