A balaclava does two jobs that have nothing to do with each other, and the best one for a given rider depends on which job is wanted. In summer it is a thin layer that takes sweat off the head and keeps the helmet lining clean, which extends the life of the lining and is the reason experienced riders wear one in July. In winter it closes the gap at the neck where cold air arrives and stops the collar from chafing. The specification that decides comfort in both cases is the least glamorous one: seam placement.
