A motorcycle battery spends a good part of the year not being used, and a charger exists to deal with that. The first thing to establish is the chemistry, because it is not one product any more. A conventional lead-acid, an AGM and a lithium battery each want a different charging profile, and a charger that does not publish lithium support should not be connected to a lithium battery — the voltages and the behaviour at the end of charge are different, and the battery's own maker says so. Chargers that support several chemistries publish a selector, and using it is the whole of the job. Beyond that, the useful distinction is between a charger and a maintainer. A charger puts energy back into a flat battery and is rated by its current in amps — for a motorcycle battery, one to four amps is the usual range, and more is not better, since a small battery charged fast gets hot. A maintainer holds a charged battery at the right voltage indefinitely, switching between a float and a rest phase, and that is what is wanted over a winter. Most products do both and publish which modes they have. The remaining lines are practical and published. A desulphation or recovery mode, which makers describe and this site reports as described. The connectors: a ring-terminal lead left permanently on the battery with a weatherproof plug is what makes the charger get used, and most chargers supply one.
