Cheek pads and crown liners are the only published way to change how a helmet fits, and that makes this family more useful than its price suggests. Pads are catalogued in thicknesses, usually in steps of a few millimetres, and a helmet that is correct in circumference but loose at the cheeks can be brought to a proper fit with a thicker pad rather than a smaller size. The reverse is just as true: a helmet that presses on the jaw can be made wearable with thinner pads without losing the shell size that fits the skull. Makers publish the thicknesses available for each model, and that list is the specification that matters. The second reason this family exists is washing. A liner that comes out, washes and goes back in is a helmet that still smells acceptable in its third year; a liner glued in place is a helmet with a service life set by its lining. Makers publish whether the liner is removable and, less often, whether it is machine washable and at what temperature. Then the material questions: an antibacterial treatment is commonly claimed and rarely quantified, and a moisture-wicking fabric is a real difference in a hot month. And one feature published as a feature and not as a claim: emergency release tabs, which let cheek pads be pulled out with the helmet still on a rider's head, and which this site reports as the published provision it is.
