Motorcycle cleaning products are judged on what they must not touch, which is the opposite of how they are advertised and the more useful line to read. A motorcycle presents painted plastic, bare aluminium, anodised parts, chrome, rubber, a chain carrying seals and brakes that must stay free of oil, all within a few centimetres of each other. Makers who have taken this seriously publish a surface compatibility list and, importantly, an exclusion list — most general cleaners state that they are not to be used on brake discs or on the chain, and those two exclusions are the ones that matter. The family divides by job. A general cleaner is sprayed on, left for a published contact time and rinsed; it is judged on that contact time and on whether it needs the machine cool and out of the sun, which most do. A degreaser is stronger, is intended for the chain area and drivetrain, and must be published as safe for O-rings if it is going anywhere near a sealed chain. A protectant goes on after drying and is judged on what it is for — some are for painted surfaces, some for unpainted plastic, and at least one common category is explicitly not for seats or footpegs because it leaves a slippery film, which makers say plainly. Two further published lines are worth comparing: pH, where acidic cleaners bite harder on aluminium and makers say so, and dilution, since a concentrate at five to one is a different price per wash from a ready-to-use spray.
