What is an anti-fog visor insert, and do I need one?

It is a second pane held a fraction of a millimetre inside the visor, with a silicone bead sealing the gap between the two. The trapped air keeps the inner pane close to the temperature of your breath, so moisture has nothing cold to condense on.

Why it works when a coating does not

Fogging is condensation: warm, wet air meets a surface colder than its dew point. A coating changes how the water sits on the glass — it spreads rather than beading — which helps a little and does nothing about the temperature difference. An insert removes the temperature difference, which is the cause rather than the symptom.

What it needs to fit

Pins. The visor has to carry two small eccentric pins that the insert clips onto, and a visor sold as prepared for an insert has them. A visor without pins cannot take one — this is not something that can be added afterwards, and it is the single reason to prefer a prepared visor even if you do not want an insert yet.

Matching it to the visor, not the helmet

Inserts are catalogued against visors, and they come in generations whose pin spacing differs. A helmet that has had a replacement visor fitted may now need a different insert from the one its own model page lists. The visor part number is what to match.

Why it is a consumable

The seal is a silicone bead, and it hardens over time. When it does, the gap breathes, the trapped air is no longer trapped, and the insert stops working — usually gradually, often blamed on the weather. It also scratches more easily than a visor, because it is soft by design and sits where a glove touches it.

The tinted option

Inserts exist tinted as well as clear, which is a way to have a dark visor that becomes clear again in a minute rather than requiring a visor change at dusk. The maker publishes a light transmission figure for each, and that figure is what a local rule refers to.
