Why does a top box need a separate mounting plate?

Because the box locks onto a plate, the plate bolts to a rack, and the rack is specific to your machine. Three parts, three references — and a listing that quotes only the box has quoted about half the price.

Why it is built that way

A top box has to come off in seconds and go back on securely, which means a quick-release interface. That interface is the plate. Making the plate separate lets one box fit many machines, and lets one machine carry different boxes — but it also means the interface is a purchase of its own.

The part that is specific to you

The rack, sometimes called a fitting kit. It bolts to mounting points on the machine, and it is designed for that model and often that model year. This is the piece that cannot be substituted, and it is usually the most expensive of the three.

Why the plate decides your future

Plates are brand-specific and the main systems are not interchangeable. Once a rack and a plate are fitted, the boxes that can go on them are that maker’s. It is worth choosing the system before choosing the box, in the same way that a camera body decides the lenses.

The figures on the box itself

Capacity in litres, measured differently enough between makers that the useful test is whether a full-face helmet fits — and which one, since a large adventure helmet is a different object from a compact jet. And maximum load in kilograms, which is genuinely limiting: a top box sits at the end of a lever behind the rear axle, and the maker’s figure accounts for that.

The small option that is worth asking about

Keying the box lock to the ignition, which most makers offer and few listings mention. One key instead of two, decided at the time of purchase.
