What the seller commits to paper

0 to 100 psi. A large dial stated readable from any angle. A finger reset button. Compact and light enough for a small toolbox, a rucksack or a bag. For cars, SUVs, motorhomes, ATVs, trucks and motorcycles.

The figures it keeps to itself

A tolerance. The first bullet says the gauge “is an accuracy standard, to ensure an accurate reading of up to 100 psi”, which is a sentence about accuracy containing no measurement of it.

Two gauges in this family publish figures — ±0.06 bar and ±0.3 bar. On an instrument whose entire purpose is to produce a number, that is the number to want.

What it has that the digital gauges do not

No battery.

A tyre gauge is used a handful of times a year. A digital one with a dead cell tells you nothing at all, and the cell is always dead. A mechanical dial gauge that has been in a pannier for two winters works the moment you press it on a valve.

That is a real argument for this tool and it is why dial gauges are still sold.

The unit to watch

It reads psi. European motorcycle manuals give bar. Roughly 14.5 psi to the bar — so 2.5 bar is about 36 psi. If this is the gauge you carry, write your own figures in psi on something and keep it with the tool.
