MANNOL

Classifications published on both fluids

What both listings publish

Classifications.

The engine oil: JASO MA/MA2 and API SL, with wear and scuffing protection stated to come from esters. The brake fluid: SAE J1703/J1704, ISO 4925 Class 3/4 and FMVSS 116 DOT 3/4.

That is the pair a manual is matched against, on both products. One four-litre can on the same shelf publishes neither an API category nor a JASO grade nor an oil type.

Naming the chemistry

“Esters” rather than “advanced additive technology”. It is published without a percentage or a test, so it stays a statement about formulation rather than a measured result — and it is a far more specific statement than the shelf average.

Two things to read carefully

API SL is an earlier category than the API SN and SN PLUS published by rivals. What matters is what your own manual asks for: an older engine specified around SL is not served better by a newer category, and a newer engine specified for SN should have SN.

The brake fluid names clutch systems. Many motorcycles have a hydraulic clutch running on the same fluid from its own reservoir — and it is the reservoir nobody changes, because a clutch degrades quietly where a brake lever tells you.

Nothing written into the text below is a current price. Where an amount appears in a sentence, it is the reading taken on the day that sentence was written; what a shop is asking at this moment loads beside the product itself, and that is the figure to go by.
